acting with an excess of caution, i'm making all my works on ao3 viewable by 'registered users only' as a result of this post re: sudowrites ai.

the tldr is that sudowrites ai has been scraping ao3 and using that text as the dataset to train their ai. i don't like doing this, but i also don't want to be part of the dataset. hopefully this is something ao3 can push back against.

i don't spend as much time over here as i do on tumblr, but having seen a few posts there re: twitter meltdown, i wanted to repost here something i posted there. i think most people subscribed here are likely also in my circle on tumblr, but if this provides someone some needed reassurance, than it's done what i wanted it to.

i’ve seen a few posts bemoaning the loss of twitter-as-public-square, as well as the loss of material posted there in the past. and realized maybe not everyone remembers, and this isn’t a 100% solution to the loss of that material, but in 2010 the library of congress in the us was given the record of all public tweets up to that point in time (announcement here). loc staff wrote a blog post about it (here) that includes links to later updates (2013 status report), and until 2017 was transferring all public tweets to the loc (status report).

there are a lot of caveats. not all of those tweets are searchable / accessible yet since it takes the archivists time to process things. since 2017 public tweets are selected for archiving based on loc criteria rather than all tweets automatically being archived. only public tweets were / are archived, etc.

but a lot is already archived, and some of it is already searchable on loc.gov. also, if you use firefox, archive.org has a plugin you can use to archive sites using the wayback machine, which could be useful here, as well as in other situations where you want to preserve a webpage you think might be in danger of disappearing. i've found old geocities and tripod fics because they were on wayback machine.

i'm working on converting all the 'author' and 'artist' tags on my pinboard to 'creator' tags, since i bookmarked a vid recently and neither of those felt appropriate, plus it will link creators who produce work in more than one medium, and it's a bit tedious, but it's also sort of interesting to go through my bookmarks this way. the earliest ones are from the early 2010s, and fandoms i barely participate in these days. a lot of dead links that i don't have the heart to clear right now, although i should either find alternate links or run them through the wayback machine to see if that works. a lot of fic that i'm not sure i'll ever actually read again, because i read the description and tags and sort of wonder what i was thinking, although i'm certain i bookmarked for what i thought were very good reasons at the time, lol. but when i first started this project a while ago, i also found some fic that i had to pause and re-read, because i remembered that fondly, and some have really held up through the years.
