ancient mandos au where you hunt for your intended, then hunt your intended. This one lost steam before i got to boba and din playing high stakes hide and seek, but i like the snippit i ended up with.

Boba yawned, opening the door to his home, and nearly stumbled over the butchered shatual laid on the threshold. The hide had been beautifully prepared, and neatly spread, the cured segments of meat carefully laid out and strewn with dried herbs to preserve the meat and keep away vermin. The boiled clean skull with its broad, branching horns laid in the center of the display.

Blood rose hot in Boba's cheeks. There was no question such a gift was given with intent. He'd thought himself past youthful infatuation, and yet the richness of the gift had his heart hammering. A shatual was not truly dangerous prey, but it was not the risk that gave value. All parts of the shatual could be used, and the meat of one animal would feed Boba for some time, as he lived alone. He was a more than proficient hunter himself, too.

Picking up the skull, Boba inspected it carefully. His suitor had painstakingly carved the pale bone with intricate designs of gratitude and goodwill. At the center of the forehead was carved a sigil. Mudhorn. He knew only one who used such a mark. Din, of Clan Djarin. Boba's cheeks grew even warmer as he remembered deep brown eyes and shaggy dark hair, a few strands of silver at Din's temples. Broad hands, strong, but gentle as they cared for Din's child.

Boba raised the skull further, touching the shatual's forehead to his own in thanks. He would have to think of a worthwhile gift to reciprocate with, to signal his acceptance of Din's offer of courtship.

All is quiet in the cramped cargo area, the soft susurrus of carborundum grit rubbed over metal plate, the slight creak of weight shifting. Din sits unobtrusively in the corner, watching as Boba slowly, meditatively buffs away at chipped paint. Beneath the faded green is an equally chipped layer of pale primer, and once that is wiped off, the metal glints in the dim light.

Din feels a bit like a voyeur, watching Boba clean away the years of damage to his armour. Now that Din's seen Boba's fighting experience while wearing the armour, there can be no question that it's actually his. Every Mandalorian tweaked and fitted their armour differently, no two sets identical. And now that Din's seen Boba in armour, seeing him without feels almost uncomfortably intimate.

Boba lifts the section of plate he's been scouring, tilting it this way and that to ensure that he hasn't missed any spots. He rubs over the surface with a soft rag, as gentle as if he were cleaning a child's face. ( Read more... )
