Summary:

When Sabé can apply the Queen's makeup on herself without the slightest mistake, without her eyelid trembling or hand faltering, she turns to the other handmaidens and practices on them.

Sabé practices the Queen's makeup first on herself, glancing frequently at the little flatpic she'd printed out for reference. The flat white to reduce her face to an expressionless mask. The pale pink of lotus blossoms around her eyes, youthful and springlike as the Queen. Then stark black, to line her eyes, define them. The Queen is a being of vision. Last, the bright red: a sweep over the top lip, then the sharp line down the center of the lower lip for remembrance, a voice for the voiceless; a dot on each cheek, tears for the rich waters that sustained Naboo.

When Sabé can apply the Queen's makeup on herself without the slightest mistake, without her eyelid trembling or hand faltering, she turns to the other handmaidens and practices on them. While her own facial structure is most similar to Padmé's, that means only that she will be the primary decoy. She would not be the only decoy. Each of them would become Amidala, at least for a couple hours.

The colours are a little off on Eirtaé and Yané, whose skin tones and bone structure are the most different from Padmé's. Still, Sabé learns to apply the Queen's makeup on them - first as she would apply it on herself, and then with careful alterations to disguise the differences between them and Padmé. Contouring with pale greys and pinks shifts the angle of a nose or the fullness of a cheek. Slight alterations to the shade and shape of the mask-like white makeup similarly shifts the perception of the skin tone beneath, and the shape of the jaw that supports it.

When Sabé perfects the variances for each handmaiden - careful holopics documenting the alterations - she applies herself to the Queen's face. Padmé sits beautifully still, listening as one of the others reads out minutes or reports, and Sabé brings the brush down over her clean skin in even strokes, creating the flat mask that would become Amidala.
