for jedijune on tumblr, week three prompt 'confronting fear'

Barriss assessed the sunbaked landscape. There was little cover, and they were surrounded. The Geonosians had heavy artillery and overwhelming numbers of both their own troops and battledroids of various makes and models. Fear sank in her gut like a cold stone, tendrils rising to chill her limbs and deaden her senses. Barriss shivered despite the heat that sweltered around them.

Master Luminara would remind Barriss gently that her fear was understandable, natural. Barriss knew the traditional koans and mantras, but they didn't make her feel much better at the moment. Her instinct was to reach out to her fellow Jedi, let their strength and determination bolster her. She had tried that earlier and had felt their reassuring battle-calm, but she had also felt the pulsing, screaming chill of beings dying and in pain all around them. Half her fear was of reaching out again, feeling that riot of others' fears and deaths. Fear only gripped Barriss tighter as the battle drew out longer, the air seeping with tension.

A warm brush of Force-light swept over Barriss and her eyes snapped almost instantly to Master Kenobi where he defended their troops with Master Luminara. His focus was on the Geonosians surrounding them and the troopers they protected but his gentle reassurance helped Barriss calm herself. She sucked in a shuddering breath, barely managing not to cough at the grit in the air. Again. It wasn't true meditation, she wasn't experienced enough yet to meditate while maintaining full awareness of her surroundings, which was necessary in such a situation. But it still helped her mind settle.

She was afraid, there was no point in denying it. And that fear was natural. They were in the middle of a critical battle, their troopers depending on them, the Republic depending on them. But that did not mean that she could let her fear could control her. She would face it, overcome it, act as a Jedi should. Barriss took another breath, slower, and the fear dissipated like so much mist under the Geonosian sun, unable to conquer her. Her shoulders straightened and jaw set as determination took hold. She would not give into her fear, not today.
