Summary:
Quinlan.
Just seeing his friend's name was like a breath of warmth sweeping through Obi-Wan, little sparks of light dancing in his blood and swelling in his lungs. To know that Quin lived - it was beyond anything he'd dared to imagine. Cut off from the pain and emptiness in the Force, Obi-Wan hadn't let himself believe anyone other than Yoda survived. To hope had seemed like inviting pain.
But Quinlan. Here.
Obi-Wan brushed his fingertips lightly over the carving, and felt the vague impression that Quin had left behind. It wasn't identical to the feel of Quin in the Force when they'd last spoken, but it was close, so close. Obi-Wan's eyes stung even as he folded the feeling into his memory. The tension dropped from his shoulders despite the danger he knew followed close on their heels.
So much of this journey had been lit by brave candles holding back the shadows. Bail and Breha's faith in him. The quiet gratitude of the clone trooper he had truthfully done so little for. The unlooked for help of Haja Estree as they escaped Daiyu. Leia's sparkling presence, burning ever brighter as they spent more time together. This officer whose ideals had been betrayed, and now quietly fought the Empire in turn.
And now this - Quinlan. Alive, and from the way the officer spoke, he'd passed through multiple times on the freedom trail. It was just the sort of work for a practiced Jedi Shadow like Quin excelled at, and for all that Obi-Wan wasn't feeling brave enough to emulate Quin's example, he closed his eyes for a moment and let that faint sense of Quinlan pull him back into his memories of brighter days.
A boisterous laugh in the halls of the Temple, and a strong arm around Obi-Wan's shoulders. A brash facade over a keen intellect. Teasing that gently drew Obi-Wan out of foul moods in the depths of a war that seemed unending. And rarely, that quiet faith that nestled in Quinlan's heart, letting him go out into dens of iniquity throughout the galaxy bearing a kernel of hope to share with those who had none.
The warmth of happy memories soon faded to an ember; Obi-Wan didn't have the will to sustain it in the face of his fears. Not now, when he knew that Anakin lived, that Vader was hunting him with his pack of Inquisitors. Not now, when Obi-Wan could barely stand to reach for the ravaged Force. But that ember remained deep inside Obi-Wan, strengthening the meagre fire in him that had gone so long untended.
