Summary:

Kallus checks up on his fellow Fulcrum.

Cassian twitched slightly, hand flickering toward where his sidearm would usually be holstered before recognizing the footsteps behind him. He turned slightly, giving his fellow intelligence officer a grim smile.

“No change?” Kallus asked, and Cassian silently shook his head. For a while, it had looked like none of them would make it off Scarif. When he’d awakened, Kallus had been brooding in the chair at Cassian’s bedside. Don’t do that again, Kallus had said. I wasn’t on base and you’re not allowed to do this dumb shit without me to watch your back.

Cassian had laughed, which had made him cough, but he’d been touched. Later, Kallus had told him about the rest of the battle over Scarif. Kallus had just been returned to base by his friends on the Ghost when Mon Mothma sent the Rebel fleet to Scarif, and had ridden through the flak as one of General Syndulla’s turret gunners, with Zeb, Rex, and Wolffe on the other guns. Sabine, Kallus had said, had brought her wing of crazy Mandos, and last Kallus had heard, Fenn Rau and Antoc Merrick had been trying to one up one another with kill counts. In his mind, Cassian could easily imagine the two pilots trading insults and tall tales.

“The doc says he’ll get better, they just don’t know when,” Cassian said, returning to the present. It was a minor miracle Bodhi was still with them at all, given how injured he’d been. Kallus nodded.

“You going to sit in front of the tank until he wakes?” Kallus asked, as if that was perfectly reasonable.

“Maybe,” Cassian admitted, not as defensive as he might have been with almost anyone else. But then, Cassian well remembered Kallus being literally carried off the Ghost after at least one mission, and Captain Orrelios camping in front of a tank until Kallus could be decanted.

“Want me to run by the mess for you and see what the news is on the rest of the ground team?” Kallus offered, and the tension leached from Cassian’s form.

“Yes,” Cassian admitted, voice small and a bit wet. Kallus clapped a big, warm hand on his shoulder and squeezed gently, mindful of the bruising that purpled Cassian’s back.

“I’ll be back in a few,” Kallus said, then limped away again.

When Kallus returned, he found Cassian in the same spot he'd left him. He wasn't in the least surprised. Kallus dragged over a pair of chairs, and sank gracelessly into one, grunting at Cassian in greeting. Cassian dropped into the other chair, and accepted the sandwich Kallus handed him.

"Checked on the others on my way back," Kallus said, after swallowing his own bite of food. "Imwe and Malbus are in recovery, so is Erso. Your pilot is the worst off - the others didn't need as long in their tanks. AP-5 is going over inventory to see if we have enough parts to build K2 a new chassis, and Chop said the backups K2 made just before you left are optimal - you'll have to fill him in on the mission, but he should be fine too."

Cassian's shoulders dropped another few centimeters, and he slumped back in his uncomfortable seat. "Thanks," he rasped out, and finally began to eat.
