It builds between them so slowly over the years that Herc doesn’t really register all he has to lose until the Marshal is standing there in his gleaming carapace of a drift suit. Herc’s heart lodges in his throat, and when he looks in Stacker’s fathomless eyes, he sees the knowledge reflected there. They both know that Stacker getting in that Jaeger is slow motion suicide. They also know Herc isn’t going to stop him. Can’t stop him.

Herc wants to tell Chuck to bring Stacker back. But that’s too much to heap on his boy’s shoulders. Just walking into the breach with a bomb on his back is more than enough of a burden. Herc couldn’t possibly ask more of Chuck, not when there’s already so much left unsaid.

Knowing there’s nothing he can do makes this the hardest battle of Herc’s life. He’d rather fight a kaiju barehanded. Instead he listens across the miles as his boy grows up, becomes a man he’s damn proud of, and dies only a breath later. Dies beside the man it took Herc too long to realize he loves. He'll honour Stacker’s memory, and Chuck's. He’ll be there for Raleigh and Mako.
