Cross my heart and hope to die [ao3]

“They’ve asked me to take lead on a team of vode going over old battlefields,” Cody said over latemeal. Obi-Wan smiled, and Cody shook his head. “Why do I sense your fingers in this?” Obi-Wan shrugged, and took a sip of his drink.

“I know how much it bothered you, when we couldn’t lay your brothers properly to rest before moving on,” Obi-Wan said. “I wasn’t sure if this would be a mission you wanted, but I wanted to ensure you had to opportunity to accept or refuse on your own terms.”

Cody smiled. It would be a grim task he knew, but his Jedi was right. It would also be a comfort, to say a final goodbye to those brothers marching far away. From the brief he’d read, many worlds were setting aside those battlefields in honour of his brothers, so their final resting places would remain undisturbed. It was a sentiment Cody appreciated. The vode had known far too little peace in life. He liked the idea of the sites of their battles becoming wildernesses, places of natural beauty. He thought they would too.

“It’ll kept me off-planet for a while,” Cody warned, and Obi-Wan’s smile shifted slightly, got a bit sad.

“I’ve gotten used to having you with me,” Obi-Wan said, as if admitting to something wrong. “And I’m certainly going to miss your cooking,” he said, and popped a bite of stuffed pepper into his mouth.

“You should get Rex to come stay while I’m gone,” Cody suggested with a smile. “And I’ll comm all the time.”

“Promise?” Obi-Wan asked, reaching out to tangle their fingers together across the table.

“Cross my heart and hope to die,” Cody swore, an oath he’d learned from the crechelings. As he’d hoped, Obi-Wan smiled a bit at the juvenile promise.

“I’ll hold you to it,” Obi-Wan said, tugging Cody’s hand to his mouth and gently kissing his fingers. “Be careful out there.”
